Extending product life and improving food safety.
As soon as your fruits or vegetables are harvested, they are under attack from microorganisms that cause rapid spoiling expense all along the supply chain. Many fruit and vegetable processors are tired of waste and no longer want the taste, smell and corrosiveness of bleach. Selective Micro products offer a fast-acting, more effective solution.
- Selective Micro products extend the shelf life of fresh-cut produce up to 50%
- Reduces spoilage microbes on processed fruits and vegetables
- Enhances quality—taste, appearance, texture
- Superior efficacy at low concentrations
- Neutral pH - Compatible with and non-corrosive to processing equipment at recommended use concentrations
- Unlike chlorine and peracetic acid, our products are effective over a wide pH range (pH 4-10) and at the coldest water you want to use.
Usage Example
Typical use for fresh cut fruits and vegetables is simple and easy. Place the Selective Micro sachets in a tank or vessel of water that you can use to spray or mist onto the produce. The size of the vessel and the amount of Selective Micro products used will vary depending on the size and scope of the application. At a very low concentration of only 5 ppm, Selective Micro products provide superior antimicrobial efficacy. Selective Micro has partnered with The Highland Corporation to offer a field-tested wash application. Click here to learn how effective and easy it is to protect your produce products.
FAQ’s
Chlorine dioxide use continues to grow due to its anti-microbial properties and neutral pH. Still there are many questions regarding its use and properties. Here are just a few of the most commonly asked questions and the answers.
What does Selective Micro make?
- Selective Micro products are nearly pure (>99.9%) solutions of chlorine dioxide in water. Selective Micro products are generated via patented micro-reactor technology, designed to produce a specific amount of chlorine dioxide simply by adding water.
How do I use Selective Micro products?
- Introduce Selective Micro chlorine dioxide solution into water to wash fruits and vegetables at the concentrations and for the contact times specified on the label and technical bulletin. Selective Micro products come in the form of a packaged sachet. Simply open the package and add the sachet directly to the desired volume of water. After generation, dilute as required.
Why use Selective Micro products over alternative treatments?
The Selectrocide® family of products offers a one-supplier solution to enhancing the quality and shelf life of produce.
- Reduces spoilage microbes on processed fruits and vegetables
- Enhances quality—taste, appearance, texture
- Extends shelf life of fresh-cut produce
- Superior efficacy at low concentrations
- Neutral pH
- Compatible with and non-corrosive to processing equipment at recommended use concentrations
The products are an effective alternative to other antimicrobial and washing agents on the market today. Chlorine dioxide has a higher oxidation capacity than bleach, ozone, or peroxide. In other words, chlorine dioxide has more capacity to remove organic matter. Because it is more selective to key organics, and less “aggressive” in oxidizing, at the recommended application concentrations, it is not corrosive to system components prone to oxidation.
Has chlorine dioxide been used before?
- Chlorine dioxide has been recognized as an effective biocide for decades, and is used in a range of hygiene-related applications worldwide. Municipal water systems, for example, have used chlorine dioxide to treat drinking water for over 50 years.
Why couldn’t I use chlorine dioxide before?
- Prior to the introduction of Selectrocide® in 1999, complicated, expensive mechanical generators or relatively impure “stabilized” solutions were the only ways to make chlorine dioxide. Shipping chlorine dioxide in non-frozen forms was and is prohibited. The expense of complex capital equipment, the corrosiveness of the lower-quality “stabilized” solutions, and the shipping limitations inhibited the development of many professional and consumer point-of-use applications. Now, using Selectrocide®, nearly pure (>99.9%) chlorine dioxide can be generated at the point-of use—without capital-intensive equipment.
What is the shelf life of Selective Micro products?
- In the unopened package, Selective Micro products have a shelf life of two years. Once the product is activated, use the Selective Micro solution within 15 days. Store activated solution according to instructions on label.
Will Selective Micro damage my equipment?
- No. At recommended concentrations our products are extremely compatible with materials with a neutral pH
Is there a test for concentration of Selective Micro chlorine dioxide?
- Chlorine dioxide is easily detectable. For quick on-site verification, Selective Micro offers test strips that quickly and accurately detect concentration and the rinse-out threshold.
