You know the smell before you reach the bottom of the stairs. Damp, earthy, a little like old cardboard and wet stone. What causes the musty basement smell
That distinct musty odor is the byproduct of active mold and mildew growth. As mold colonies grow on damp surfaces, they release microbial volatile organic compounds, or MVOCs. A basement gives mold everything it needs:
